It was with a bit of trepidation that I signed up for the Fun Run – not that I intended running – but knowing that there would be a few familiar WI faces was an incentive.
It was a beautiful Sunday morning and a group of some 8 WI members (two of them runners) gathered in the field by the Donkey Sanctuary. There was a great turnout and everyone was looking forward to the first ever village run. At 11am we set off, the runners first followed by the rest of us walking. It was a lovely, easy route along the lanes and pathways and time passed quickly as we chatted our way to the finish. For some, it was also a discovery walk as they admitted that parts of it were new to them.
We all completed the walk in under an hour (the 2 runners in about half the time). We then collected our well earned medals and goody bags and, as we all stood in the field eating our bananas and muesli bars, we cheered on the last family – with three young ones under 7 – as they crossed the finish line.
It was a really lovely event, very well organised and a great success. And as one of the two runners said: “It was a first 5k for me and the first time we both had run 5k without a walking break, so it felt a great achievement for us. I would never had done it without the WI support so definitely Women Inspiring Women still has a place today.”
“Great fun”, “Must do it again”, “Perfect weather” and ”Glad I did it”- were some of the appreciative comments made. And I would like to echo the sentiment expressed by one of our granddaughters as she held up her medal on sports day – “I’m a winner”!
We hope it becomes a regular village activity and attract more (WI) participation in future.
