The last minute cancellation of our speaker meant we had to find a replacement at short notice – and John Fieldsend turned out to be quite a find! His talk was entitled ‘Kinder Transport’ but it was much more a personal journey, both fascinating and emotive. He came here as a boy of 7 in 1939 on one of the Kinder trains along with 900 child Jewish refugees. We sat riveted as he took us from his upbringing in Dresden, Germany, to their flight to Czechoslovakia and then, having to say goodbye to his parents and the train journey to start a new life here in Britain. He was fostered and brought up in Sheffield, went to university to study electrical engineering and later took a degree in theology to become a vicar. Quite a life ! There is more to read in his book – ‘A Wondering Jew’, copies of which he sold to several of us.
