The WI 5/6 Bookgroup meets approximately every four to five weeks; meetings taking place in the home of one of the members of the group at a different location each month. We then discuss the book we have been reading over the previous month. These discussions tend to be quite lively as opinion is usually very divided over the content and the merits or otherwise of the current read. Not everyone enjoys every book, and titles are not always ones that everyone would choose. However, to some extent the whole purpose of joining a reading group is to try different genres and widen ones reading experience.
Books are borrowed from the Library Reading Group Services who send out a set of books each month selected from a “wish list” which we submit at the start of each year. This list has to contain as many as fifty titles, which we have chosen between us. It is therefore slightly pot-luck as to which book we receive each time, but the title has always been chosen by at least one person within the group and we have so far read an eclectic mix of fiction, non-fiction and poetry.
In addition to regular meetings, the group has taken part in outings to the theatre – last year we visited Stratford-on-Avon to see “Two Gentlemen of Verona” and this year we went to Oxford where we enjoyed an outdoor performance of “Much Ado About Nothing”. The latter production was excellent and it didn’t rain! Our December book discussion took place over a meal in a local pub!
We have currently agreed to restrict our group to ten members in order to make venues and discussions manageable and we are currently fully subscribed. However, should anyone be interested in joining us in the future when a vacancy arises, please contact Marion Symes on 837175.
